I explore modernist inspired subject matter through shape, color and figuration positioned within a contemporary context. The visual dialogue that develops between the two is often times unexpected, whimsical, even volatile occurrences that continually fuel my interest.

My current body of work began when I revisited a stack of figure drawings from art school. Using a basic blind contour method, these drawings were funky but accurate renderings and became the primary collage elements from which I built my paintings. The works on paper and small paintings are studies that are intended to be details – quick and energetic. I am interested in the immediacy of the gestures, the integration of collage and paint and conveying personality and emotion through color and movement.

In recent works, I have almost totally obliterated the actual drawings although their compositions still exert a palpable influence. By enlarging, reworking and applying a central figure with paint directly on the canvas, I am transforming these works into more complex spatial environments. Abstracted references to landscape, furniture and other man-made structures add to the slowly forming narratives. My process is an exploration of memory and perception. Certain places and things in the world have made an imprint and are reprocessed through my painting. The tension lies between the conscious and unconscious influences, the happy accidents versus planned events - each decision heading in a linear direction towards an unknown outcome. These paintings are a visual extension of a physical journey.
