EXHIBITION STATMENT:
One of the most difficult questions for an artist to answer is When is a piece of art complete? A simple line drawing on a small piece of paper could take as long to perfect as a monumental painting or sculpture. A quick gesture drawing of a figure can sometimes better capture a likeness than a belabored portrait. Between the beginning of a new piece of art work and the end, there is a moment when the piece of art talks back to the artist. It dictates its own fate; the key is for the artist to listen.
In this group exhibition we are commenting on this conflation of an artworks journey towards completion. Works on paper and panel that have leapt from the artists sketchbook to evolve into a more honed piece of artwork are exhibited. We have also invited Art House Cooperative from Atlanta, Georgia to display its most recent invitational: The Sketchbook Project. Art House has collected 2,500 sketch books from around the world, centered on the theme Everyone We Know. Please join us in exploring strangers intimate sketchbooks, while contemplating the artists desire to further develop the sketch.
